HISTORY:

Tempelhof International Airport1923
February 15: Negotiations open on allocating sufficient land for aviation on the Tempelhof Field. Junkers and Aero Lloyd construct a wooden administration building and two wooden hangars.
October 8: The Tempelhof Field is handed ever to the Junkers Airline and the Deutsche Aero Lloyd by the Berlin City Council, and Tempelhof Airfield is opened. A temporary concession was granted and so it was possible for the first time to begin regular flights from Berlin to Munich and Berlin to Königsberg.

1928
May 14: First fast connection from Berlin to Zurich in 5 hours and 15 minutes.

1936
Beginning of construction of the new facilities.

1945
April 22: A JU 52 flies to Warnemünde, the last Lufthansa aircraft to take off at Tempelhof.
April 28/29: Soviet troops occupy the airport.
July 4: The Americans take over the airport.

1949
June 25: The square outside the airport is given the name "Platz der Luftbrücke" (Airlift Square) by the Mayor of Berlin, Ernst Reuter.

1954
Tempelhof, with 671,555 passengers is the third largest European commercial airport after London and Paris.
June 6: The first Pan American World Airways DC-6 arrives in Berlin from New York.

1963
May 3: The new airport restaurant with 237 seats is opened.

1977
November 1: The newly founded Berlinair, Inc. opens an air shuttle service.

1982
End of March: Another air shuttle service, Tempelhof Airways USA, sets up operations at Tempelhof Airport.

1990
October 3: Air sovereignty handed over to the German authorities. For the first time after 1945 business and private planes with German registration land at Tempelhof.
October 26: Crossair is the first non-Allied airline to land, with a Saab SF 340.
October 28/29: New Airlines in Tempelhof: Crossair, Delta Air, INTERFLUG, RFG Regionalflug Interot Airways - Hamburg Airlines (November 26) - Tyrolean Airways (December 23).
December 16: As other regional airlines are planning to fly from Tempelhof, the large passenger clearance hall is reactivated. It is accessible via the service area. DLT moves scheduled services from Tegel to Tempelhof. LSG Berlin begins catering.

1992
March 7: The new snack bar "Airlift" is opened in the passenger terminal.
May 4-6: A strike by the airport fire brigade brings the entire air traffic to a standstill for three days.
June 26 to September 26: The southern runway is closed. The lighting is renewed.

1994
January: A general aviation terminal starts operations in the former flight area.
November 9: The new Regional Control Centre of the DFS (German Air Traffic Control) is inaugurated.

1996
May 4-5: The first Airport Days at Tempelhof Airport.
May 18: The 50th anniversary of civilian air transportation in Berlin is celebrated.
September 2-21: The entire 2,116 m long and 42.5 m wide southern runway at Tempelhof is repaired at a total cost of DM 1.2 million.

1997
June 26: The prototype of the Indonesian regional passenger plane N 250 is presented.
December 15: After thorough testing of the soil and flight parameters, the final permit for a new glide-path beacon system (PAPI equipment for runway 09L/27R) is granted.

1999
March 1: Baden Air opened its Berlin-Tempelhof to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden route with a Dash 8.
June 23: During its current European tour the latest development from Boeing landed at Tempelhof Airport.
October 4: Hahn Air flies with Metroliner to Hahn.

2000
March 10: TAG City Air inaugurates flights between Berlin-Tempelhof and Paderborn-Lippstadt. The regional airline flies twice daily to North Rhine-Westphalia with a 19-seat Metro III.
November 1: The Swedish airline MaxAir flies six times a week from Berlin-Tempelhof to Malmö and Oslo with a Saab 340.
December 11: KLM exel flies four times daily from Berlin-Tempelhof to Maastricht-Aachen. Flights are with a 49-seat Embraer 145.

2001
April: Aero Berlin flies three times a week to Heringsdorf and Güttin (Rügen).
Augsburg Airways begins flights to Münster/Osnabrück and Mönchengladbach.
May 2: Reopening of the General Aviation Terminal after basic renovation for better customer service
and more security and comfort.
October 29: RAS flies six times weekly from Tempelhof to Siegerland and Sylt.

2002
January 14: With an additional evening flight Hahn Air immediately begins connecting Berlin Tempelhof with Friedrichshafen.

2003
March 31: The city-air airline starts immediately connecting Berlin with the Mozart city Salzburg six times a week with a Saab 340B.

2004
March 29: The low-cost-airline Germania Express (Gexx) starts connecting Berlin-Tempelhof with Athens, Salonika and Vienna.
Initially Gexx stations a 100-seated Fokker F100.
June 2: The aeronautical authority Berlin has decided to close the airport on October 31st.
September 24: Thanks to an new decision the airport Tempelhof doesn’t need to be closed.
