Pamplona airport is located six kilometres from Navarre's capital. Its air traffic is primarily scheduled and domestic and therefore not very seasonal, meaning that there is little variation in the figures over the course of the year. Most of its traffic, 93.5% of the total, is with Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona airports, whilst Palma de Mallorca is third in order of importance. In 2005 the airport handled a total of 342,614 passengers, 10,482 aircraft movements and 138 tonnes of cargo. History The first initiative to build an airport came from the Town Council in 1930. In February 1930 the plans were approved and work began on an area of land situated six kilometres south of the city, next to the village of Noain on the Pamplona-Madrid road During the Spanish Civil War the aerodrome was used sporadically by the Nationalists' aviation. The facilities were abandoned after the war. In November 1965, the creation of the Royal Navarre Flying Club was approved, with headquarters in Noain. In 1868 the Ministry of Aviation approved the construction of a 500-metre runway. Building began the following year and that same year the aerodrome was inaugurated. On 5 July 1972, Noain Airport was opened to domestic civilian passenger traffic and was ranked as a third class airport. The following day the airline Aviaco inaugurated a scheduled flight to Madrid and by 1975 they were running three flights a week. In February 1975, work began on the airfield's runway lighting. The following year, a power plant was built. At the end of the eighties a CAT I, instrument landing system (ILS) was installed at departure point 16 and plans were implemented to provide Pamplona airport with navigation aids at departure point 34. In October 1991, part of the passenger terminal was demolished and work began on a new building, with an extension of 2,600 square metres, which was inaugurated on 11 November 1992. In November 1993, work commenced on extending the developed area and vehicle-parking for public access. The extension increased vehicle parking to 340 spaces for normal parking, 24 for hire cars, and 6 for buses. Pamplona Airport - AENA airport Address: Ctra.
