Dwellingup is a former timber town surrounded by state
forest. It was almost destroyed by a severe bushfire in 1961, but was
rebuilt from the ashes. Today its proximity to Perth and the peace and
tranquility of the forest make it a popular day trip destination for city
dwellers. The Hotham Valley Tourist Railway operates from Perth to Dwellingup
at the weekend in the cooler months. The Etmilyn Forest Tramway goes from
the railway station into the forest, where a short nature trail highlights
the local flora. The Dwellingup Pharmacy Museum has a range of historic
chemist's equipment and products.
