Gladstone Airport (IATA: GLT, ICAO: YGLA) is located in the western suburbs of Gladstone, Queensland, Australia about 6km (8 minute drive) from the centre of the city. The main supplier of scheduled passenger air services is QantasLink, a subsidiary of Qantas. Most services are non-stop to or from Brisbane Airport. In March 2008, QantasLink was scheduled to operate about 38 return services per week (ie about 76 aircraft movements) between Gladstone and Brisbane using Dash 8 aircraft with seating from 50 to 72 passengers. In addition, a small number of direct flights operate to the north with the destinations of Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns as well as the odd service to or from Bundaberg in the south. The airport is owned and operated by the Gladstone Regional Council which took control of it by operation of the law when the Gladstone-Calliope Aerodrome Board was dissolved on 15 March 2007. Airlines
Virgin BlueThroughout the course of 2007, more than 21 regional airports across Australia were looked at by Virgin Blue for their viability for Virgin services. If they were to fly to Gladstone it would be for services to/from Brisbane and perhaps Sydney using their Embraer E-Jets. It is not known what the outcome of the visit to Gladstone is with more to be announced by the airline in due course. As of January 2010, Virgin Blue services have not commenced. However, as of January 2010 it has been stated that the airline is looking at potentially commencing services to the city, or if not to Emerald or Bundaberg. Despite a Virgin Blue spokeswoman stating that petitioning would not influence the commencement of services to the city, a Facebook group has been established with the aim of creating an electronic petition. Airport UpgradeThe Gladstone Regional Council have commenced the upgrade of the airport. The council announced that the airport would not shutdown during the upgrade, although there may be some disruptions to commercial flights in July 2009.
