Hamilton Island is one of the larger islands off the east coast of Australia about a 1-hour flight from Sydney. It is mainly a tourist island based around the one large resort and the fact that it holds a big yachting regatta every year. The island has one airport and this is fairly good as planes as large as 777’s can land on it. The big problem is that when they come into land they approach the island, pass it and then do a 180-degree turn, banking at 45 degrees, to line themselves up for the approach. It is a bit hair-raising if you aren’t used to that sort of thing, as you get a good view of either a lot of sky or a lot of water. The departure and arrivals lounge isn’t very big, about the size of one and a half football pitches in area, but suitable for the island. Your luggage on arrival is collected by the island taxi/bus service and taken directly to your room in the hotel. Unfortunately you have to carry it to the bus on the return journey and check it in yourself. The airport has one shop that doesn’t sell much, but what do you expect for the size. Hamilton Island, in the heart of the Whitsundays, is the ultimate Great Barrier Reef destination, offering easy access to the reef and only a short sail away from the stunning stretch of Whitehaven Beach. Hamilton Island is the only island with a variety of hotels and apartments to suit all tastes and budgets as well as an endless array of activities. Hamilton Island is nestled in the heart of 74 tropical Whitsunday islands, just off the Queensland Coast and at the edge of the world-famous Great Barrier Reef. As the largest inhabited island in the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is the only island with an airport catering for direct commercial and charter flights. It is serviced by at least 48 flights a week by Jetstar Airways. Including direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and by Qantas from Cairns with convenient connections to domestic and international ports. Over 80 per cent of Hamilton Island has been carefully preserved in its natural state so that visitors can continue to enjoy the pristine beauty of the island's fabulous beaches, unspoilt nature trails and secluded hideaways. Over the past 3 years, Hamilton Island Limited has invested almost $56M in refurbishing and upgrading existing features as well creating new facilities.
