This relatively new town was established in 1968 on Nickol Bay as a part
of the giant Hammersley Iron project as a port for exporting the raw materials
from the mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. It now also serves the offshore
development of the North West Shelf gas reserve of Woodside Petroleum.
Karratha is a good starting point to explored places like the Fern Pools
(pictured) in Karijini National Park.
Karratha Aero Club (KAC) was established in 2001 by a group of aircraft
enthusiasts in the Pilbara town of Karratha. It has developed from a core
group all with a keen interest in flying, varying from novice pilots to
instructors, to become the most northern flying club in Western Australia.
The club had its first fly-in at Roebourne in July 2002 with a spot-landing
competition and BBQ. In November 2002 several members and aircraft flew
to Coral Bay for a weekend R&R.
A few of the club members have their own aircraft, ranging from RV-6s
to a Debonair. Currently the club hires a Cessna 172 from a local charter
company but hopes to have its own aircraft in the near future

They are currently building a new taxiway which stands out as the
unfished black asphalt in the picture. You can also notice the "heli-runway"
to the west of the taxiway (ie north of the main runway). All fixed
wing operations are restricted to the south of the main runway per
