Moruya - Country Town on the (NSW) South Coast.

Situated on the banks of the beautiful Moruya River, Moruya is a country town in the traditional style with an easy, relaxed lifestyle far removed from the pace of city life. Located inland from the coast, Moruya is well placed to use as a base from which visits to other points of interest can be undertaken. Moruya Heads, for example, is only about 10 kms to the east and boasts beautiful views north along the coast and west over the estuary of the Moruya River. The Airport is located 6km from the town centre.

Moruya has a lot going for it, a thriving fair dinkum country town right on the coast with an absolutely magnificent river winding it's way to the Araluen Valley. First settled by Europeans in 1827 Moruya started life as a farming settlement with two large farms in the area, Shannon View and Kiora. More settlement followed when gold was discovered in the Araluen Valley in 1851. Broulee situated on the coast was the more significant of the two settlements with it's sheltered harbour offering good anchorage for vessels. A flood in 1841 removed a dangerous sandbar at the mouth of the Moruya River allowing access to Moruya by boat and in 1851 activities were transferred to the thriving township of Moruya which was proclaimed a town in 1855.
