The Sunshine Coast Airport (approximately half way between Caloundra and Noosa) is owned, operated and developed by the Maroochy Shire Council. It is the principal airport for the Sunshine Coast region and is the only local airport capable of servicing jet operations. The airport supports a number of regular public transport (RPT) services (with Boeing 737 and Shorts SD360 aircraft) and a variety of general aviation (GA) activities. The activities are in-keeping with the increasing demands of tourism, passenger traffic, general aviation and commercial opportunities.
There are direct daily flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with frequent connecting flights to both domestic and international ports.
The domestic terminal has an area of 5,550m? accommodating Qantas, Virgin Blue and Sunshine Express Airlines. The terminal was upgraded in 1996/97 at a cost of some $9.2M. It has the capacity for three B737 aircraft arriving or departing simultaneously or approximately 850,000 passenger movements per annum.
The terminal has provision for international charter operations (with allowances for customs, immigration and quarantine facilities) which will allow for direct flights from New Zealand to the Sunshine Coast.
The Airport is officially known as the Maroochydore/Sunshine Coast Airport and is situated on the coastal strip five kilometres north of Maroochydore and is approximately equidistant between Caloundra to the south and Noosa Heads to the north.
It is located on approximately 350 hectares of land just north of the Maroochy River and east of the Sunshine Motorway.
