Wagga Wagga's unusual name has lead many to believe it is a mythical country town. Wagga is the local Wiradjuri Aboriginal word for crow and to the plural, Wiradjuri repeat the word. Thus Wagga Wagga translates as the place of many crows. Others know Wagga Wagga as the nursery for a phenomenal number of national and international sporting champions. The Airport is located 10km from the town centre.

Regular airline services are operated by Kendell and Qantaslink airlines using modern SAAB, Dash8 and Metro turbo-prop aircraft. Regular services are available to Sydney, Melbourne and Albury.

The Airport is Commonwealth (RAAF) owned and the civil side was leased by WWCC in 1992 for 30 years. It is approximately 500 acres (202 Hectares) in area. It has two Runways: a sealed Runway of 1770 metres in length x 45 metres in width and a Grassed Runway of 1526 metres in length x 30 metres in width. The largest aircraft able to use the sealed runway would weigh 30 tonnes.

Until September 2001, there were three airline operators conducting Regular Public Transport operations at Wagga (Qantas, Kendell & Hazelton). Kendell & Hazelton were subsidiaries of Ansett, and with the collapse of Ansett, these two airlines were placed in receivership.

Approximately 120,000 passengers per year used the Wagga Airport, but since September 2001, there has been a decline of about 15,000 passengers, averaging 3,000 per month.

Council’s income from the airport is derived from three main areas, comprising: Rent from sub-leased sites, Landing fees of $7.00 per Tonne, and a Passenger Levy of $7.00 per head.

I am on call twenty-four hours a day, to cater for possible emergencies and customer service. Most of the after hours work is related to enquiries about flight times, airport services, lost baggage, aircraft parking arrangements etc.
