Located only six kilometers from the U.S.
border and 45 minutes by car from Vancouver, Langley Regional Airport
is an exciting destination point in itself, and is the centre point or
hub of the lower mainland Langley area.
Langley Regional Airport is often described
as a jewel of an airport in a perfect setting. The energy in growth of
its surrounding area complemented by rural open areas is reflected in
the manner in which the airport is developing. Its 120 acres still remain
largely open and green yet its commercial and recreational areas are buzzing
with activity. Revenue from their leases and gas sales pay for the airport's
operation and development.
The airport has integrated itself with the local communities of Langley
City and Langley Township and is a destination not only for jobs and high-tech
industry and service but one for fun, learning and celebration. Since
1997, the airport has been the location of a two-day celebration of Canada
Day, drawing attendance of 60,000 to a wide range of family activities
and enterainment including stage shows, flying displays, exhibitions,
numerous children's rides and a swearing-in ceremony of new Canadians.
The airport will continue to evolve, keep pace with its community, and
strive to maintain and earn its reputation as the best community airport
in the province.
History
The Township of Langley leased the airport
from the federal government in 1945, received its permanent license in
1946 and purchased the airport in 1967 for $24,300 to operate it as a
municipal airport.
A restrictive covenant in the sales agreement stated that the land could
revert back to federal ownership if the Township ceased operating the
property as an airport. In 1978, the Township adopted a new policy to
operate the airport until 2001. In February 1990, Council extended operation
to 2015 and in 1997 extended operation indefinitely.
Langley Regional Airport is built on 120 acres with a 2,100' north-south
paved runway and a 2,300' east-west grass strip. Only the paved runway
has night-time lighting. Runways are supported by a taxiway system and
paved parking area. There are three helicopter landing pads. The two main
pads are capable of accomodating the largest helicopter, the Sikorsky
S-61. These two pads are connected by a hover taxiway. The most westerly
pad has 24 hours emergency lighting for medical evacuation.
