Celle, Germany is an old town, founded in 1292 AD, and
is located on the Aller River, in Northern Germany, 30 miles NE of Hannover
on the B3 highway. At the time I was stationed there, in 1962, it had
a population of 50,000 to 75,000 inhabitants. Weather there leaves a lot
to be desired, as there are only about 60 days of sun per year, and lots
and lots of rain. The people are friendly and cordial, but also very strict
and proper. They speak High-German. The German Air Base in Celle is called
Wietzenbruh, located on the Southern edge of Celle, and is about the size
of a small commercial airport in the US. It was established as a civilian
airport a few years before the 2nd world war, becoming a German Military
Air base just prior to WWII. During the war, it was home to a squadron
of Messersmidt ME109s, as well as various cargo support aircraft. After
the war, it found itself located at the end of one of the three air corridors
into and out of, Berlin, Germany, and played a major roll during the Berlin
Air Lift.
