Dresden Airport setitself the aim of being a successful, economically independent enterprise providing excellent services in the transport sector. We consider Europe, an economic region which is both growing together and expanding towards the East, to be our sphere of activity. Being a gateway to the state capital, Dresden, and from Dresden to the world, we increasingly see our role as being a valuable partner for tourism and industry by presenting a wide range of services. We set standards as regards the cost/performance ratio and shape the service market through innovation. For this, we are expanding our competence in the fields of transportation, letting and services. The wishes of our customers form the basis for our activities. We convince our customers through our performance and try to win their loyalty for the long term. We are sure that our infrastructure provides the perfect foundation for their business. In the course of advancing the airport we are linking traditions and forward-looking, ecologically sustainable solutions. We will justify the confidence our shareholders pay in our company in the long term by producing adequate revenues. The positive ambience of the airport, reflected in its social and economic environment forms the basis for our commitment. Qualified and motivated staff are essential to achieve our shared goals. To ensure partnership relationships oriented towards success we entrust our employees with responsibility and create the necessary spaces for their development. Our collaboration is characterised by an atmosphere of appreciation and support. Because we know our staff are the key to success. History: There has always been enthusiasm for flying in Dresden. As early as 1784 - just two years after the first, still unmanned, balloon flights of the Montgolfier Brothers - similar experiments were also carried out in Saxony. »Manned« aviation in the region was pioneered by a woman. It was on 30 September 1811 in Dresden that Wilhelmine Reichard first took off in her balloon. Thereafter, Dresden enjoyed regular balloon and later also zeppelin trips. The airstrip in Dresden-Kaditz soon became too small to handle the increasing air traffic in the 1920s, and so a former cavalry training ground in the uphill district of Hellerau was used instead. It was less than ten years later when even this space became too small to cope with the number of starts and landings. New possibilities were now sought to establish a larger air field, which could also be used for military purposes. In March 1934 a decision was made in favour of Dresden-Klotzsche, and the construction work started four months later. After one year of construction, the Airport Dresden-Klotzsche was officially opened on 11 July 1935. A modern airport building called Hansa-Haus accommodated a restaurant with a large café hall and bars, a skittle club and a roof terrace restaurant with 750 seats. There were even a few hotel rooms. Daily connections to Chemnitz, Leipzig, Berlin, Breslau and Prague were offered. The strategically important air base was not targeted during the war. The Deutsche Wehrmacht tried to destroy the airfield and technical equipment when retreating in April 1945, but German workers managed to prevent at least the Hansa-Haus from being blown up. The Wehrmacht moved out of the airfield on 7 May 1945, leaving an incredible chaos behind. From the early 1960s, the Dresdeners were able to fly to Berlin, Erfurt,
Barth and Heringsdorf on holiday, later there were also Interflug connections
to Budapest, Moscow, Leningrad, Sofia, Burgas, Varna and Constanta, on
the Romanian coast of the Black Sea. From early 1988 until September 1989, extended reconstruction work was carried out. NVA, who was owner of the entire runway, taxiways and apron at that time, had the runway renewed. Its width was reduced to 51 metres to comply with international standards. At the same time, Interflug took over the entire terminal building, the public areas were then expanded and refurbished. The terminal was re-opened just as events came to a head politically in autumn 1989. In March 2001 one of the most beautiful airport terminals commenced operation and at the same time the underground S-Bahn (urban railway) station was opened. Around that time, a number of additional airport infrastructure projects were completed: a motorway access road, extended apron areas, new equipment halls, a weather radar and environment protection facilities.
