The town centre of Gutersloh is about 5 minutes drive from our camp. It is a medium sized town with a good selection of shops and facilities, including numerous bars and restaurants. It is well connected being both on a major motorway and on a main line rail link. The town of Bielefeld is the nearest large town and is about half an hours drive away.

The Regiment is one of five self propelled gun regiments in the British Army and we are currently based in Gutersloh, Germany, and equiped with the AS90 Self Propeled Gun.

The Regiment's Role

The Regiment's main role is to provide offensive fire support to 1 (UK) Armoured Division. The Regiment is one of three AS90 regiments in 1 (UK) Armoured Division.

The Regiment is also often required to re-role as infantry soldiers and much of the work on recent deployments has been in this role.

The Regiment has recently returned from peace support operations in Iraq. After some well earned leave the Regiment will start training for deployment on a United Nations tour of Cyprus later this year.

History

1184 First reported settlement of Gutersloh
1825 in the Cabinet Order of King Friedrich Wilhelms III. of Preußen on 14.11.1825 declared Gutersloh a Town.

1973 Am 1.1.1973 Inkrafttreten des Gesetzes zur Neugliederung der Gemeinden und Kreise des Neugliederungsraumes Bielefeld. Gütersloh wird Kreisstadt.

26 Regiment Royal Artillery was formed as a distinct unit in only relatively modern times. It was not until 1947 that 26 Regiment was formed from 4th Field Artillery Brigade, re-uniting batteries which had served together in various forms and under various titles for many years. 26 Regiment RA is in fact unique in the Gunners for being the only Regiment to have kept its 3 original gun batteries (17, 16 and 159). The histories of each of the individual batteries are therefore worth covering in a little more detail, but the modern story of the Regiment is no less exciting. Since 1947 either all or large elements of 26 Regiment RA have served in Egypt, Cyprus, Hong Kong, UK, Northern Ireland, Belize, Germany, The Gulf, Bosnia and Kosovo.
