Airport History

Skiathos’ most famous native was one of Greece’s outstanding literary figures. Alexandros Papadiamantis spent his early childhood on the island, with five brothers and sisters, before leaving to study in Athens, where he began his career in journalism. He wrote more than 100 novellas and short stories, all set against the backdrop of island life. Among his best-known works are The Gypsy, The Murderess, a compulsive psychological drama, and The Man Who Went to Another Country (which is not about me!) . . . In 1908 he returned to Skiathos where he died in 1911 aged 60. Today there is a small musuem in the town dedicated to the writer, you can see his statue at the entrance to the Bourtzi islet, you will walk the street named after him, and of course you are most likely to arrive at the new international airport which bears his name.
