Sahnewal Airport or Ludhiana Airport (IATA: LUH, ICAO: VILD) is the local airport serving the city of Ludhiana in Punjab. Near the smaller town of Sahnewal, the airport is located 5 km (3.1 mi) southeast of Ludhiana on the Grand Trunk Road. Expansion
5 October 2008
The state will soon have another airport between Payal and Sahnewal. Initially planned to be a domestic airport, the airport will later be developed into an international one. Besides, a township, “Aeropolis”, is planned to be developed near this airport.
Sources said the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Prime Minister’s Office has cleared this proposal and it is awaiting a nod from the Ministry of Defence, which is likely to be given soon. Also, this is for the first time that a new township will also come along with the proposed airport. To start with, the airport would be spread over 5,000 acres (20 km), but the total size would be around 12,000 acres (49 km) spread in Ludhiana and Fatehgarh districts.
Sources said some time back a company, Bengal Aeropolis, had made a presentation to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, after which an MoU was signed between them and PSIDC. This company is making a similar township with airport at Durgapur in West Bengal.
On 10 April 2007 a plan was proposed to expand the Sahnewal Airport to be able to handle passenger aircraft. It can already hold smaller 40-seater planes. If the expansion is taken through, the nearby city of Ludhiana may get a major change in international market interference.
Earlier, the plan was to expand the Halwara Air Force Base for passenger flights. But because of national security concerns, the plan was dropped.
Finally on 13 May Alliance airways landed at Sahnewal Airport. This is a small airport and runway strip along the parallel across the railway line. Badal was also onboard this inauguaral flight.
