The Ormand Flying Club has been in operation at Birr Airfield for over 30 years - Birr Airfield was originally called Birr View Air Strip. The area has always been closely linked with aviation for many years going back to the British Army Strip which was quite near the present field. The Club is a Registered Training Facility for the new JAR PPL Licence. The Club owns a Cessna 150 (EI:AST) used for training, one of the most popular training aircraft used today. The Club also boasts five planes owned by members, a Piper Supercruiser (EI:CMN) owned by 8 PPL's, an Aeronca Sedan (EI:BKC) owned by 4 PPL’s, a Piper Colt (EI:BAV) owned by a PPL, a Jodel 120A (EI:CJS) owned by a student and a Maule (EI:GER) owned by Instructor Pat Lanigan Ryan. Our CFI, Joe Davy is also re-building a Jodel 1050. There are also two weight-shift Microlights based at the airfield and two 3-axis Microlights who use Birr as their base.
