AboutSiauliai International Airport (also given as Zokniai Airport, Lithuanian: Zoknių oro uostas) (IATA: SQQ, ICAO: EYSA) is located 7 km southeast of Šiauliai city, in northern Lithuania. It covers the area of 471 hectares. The International Siauliai airport is situated in the Southeastern part of Siauliai in Northern Lithuania. Civil aircraft flights and ground services at the military Siauliai aerodrome are organized by Siauliai municipality owned enterprise Siauliai Airport. The owner and caretaker of this aerodrome is the Military Force of Lithuania. This aerodrome is one of the largest in the Baltic states and has two runways. HistorySiauliai airport was built before the second World War and was used as the base of military air force of independent Lithuania. After the second World war Siauliai Airport was taken over by The Soviet military air force and it was then that they constructed two parallel 3500 and 3200m. length runways. The airport was one of the largest military airports in the former Soviet Union. In 1955 it was only one of 6 Soviet bases capable of handling the new Myasishchev M-4 bomber. It was home to 53 APIB (53rd Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment) flying MiG-23 aircraft with the ML, MLD, and UB variants and the MiG-27. It was home to 196 VTAP (196th Military Transport Aviation Regiment) flying Il-76 aircraft. It served 117 OAP (117th Independent Aviation Regiment) flying An-12PPS aircraft. The Tupolev Tu-126 was based here during the 1960s or 1970s. After the restoration of independence the aerodrome had to be reconstructed to suit the civil requirements. At the beginning reconstruction ( it was started in 1995) it was decided to make it suitable for international transportation of both cargo and passengers. After two years of construction works carried out by „Philips Projects", the aerodrome was certified as cat.1 by ICAO requirements. New navigation equipment and systems were established and a new Tower for air traffic control and passenger terminal were built. Siauliai now appears to be the home of the NATO Baltic Air Policing forward deployment providing airspace security to the three new Baltic members of NATO. Delightful statisticsThe international Siauliai airport is becoming more and more inviting: not only customers are pleased with convenient geographical location between East and West, with 3500 metres long runway, but also cheaper cargo service cost. "In 2008 the circulation was nearly 6m Litas, when in 2007 it was 3m Litas. In 2007 there was about 1000 tons of cargo transferred, when in 2008 there was more 2000 tons transferred. There was more than a hundred and a half aircrafts serviced" - according to Siauliai airport director Romas Miksys. Siauliai airport infrastructure and procedures are suitable for working with cargo aircrafts, the ones that are mainly landing here. Siauliai airport is specialising in servicing especially huge cargo aircrafts such as Boeing 747-200, An-124 "Ruslan", Boeing 757-200, Boeing 767-500, DC 10, A 310, MD 82, MD 90, C17 and others. The airport is constantly cooperating with Israel cargo transfer companies CAL, El, AL, Russian "Poliot Cargo Airlines", "Tesis", Ukrainian "FR Aviation", "Wind Rose" and others. Developmental plansOne of the main priorities of Siauliai airport is to improve passenger service; a passenger terminal is under reconstruction to achieve this. "The sterile zone is being renovated, catering facilities and VIP lounge are being reconstructed. The arrivals zone will have two passenger flows to the Schengen and Third world countries. There are planned two passenger control corridors. Luggage check-in system will be renovated and computerised; there will be airport security and customs rooms appointed. In 2009 we are planning to build an extension and the EU funds resources will be used to purchase the equipment necessary to perform border crossing procedures. Airport security system will also be improved. We expect to finish the reconstruction this year. The renovated terminal will enable us to serve more than 200 thousand passengers a year" - according to Siauliai airport director R. Miksys. In 2009 the detailed plan should be confirmed, where a civil Siauliai airport territory would be planned and then it will be possible to start creating and implementing more specific developmental plans. A lot of resources are used to purchase aircraft maintenance equipment. Siauliai airport director is predicting that the growth in 2009 would be 5 percent. Flight control towerA stand by runway ( intended only for military aircraft ) was renovated by 2005. The renovation of the main runway( intended for both military and civil aircraft) was officially finished by October 26, 2006. 280000 square meters of the surface for 3,5 km length and 45 m width was renovated and 144000 square meters of the whole base territory were covered by asphalt. Taxy ways and new systems for drainage were renewed. The aerodrome possesses the most modern signal lighting system for both stand by and main runways controlled and managed by computers, thus the system can react to the changing meteorological conditions.
