Dr. Luis María Argaña International Airport (IATA: ESG, ICAO: SGME) is an airport that serves the small city of Mariscal Estigarribia, in the semi-arid Boquerón Department of Paraguay. The airport is named after Dr. Luis María Argaña, a former politician. It is operated by Paraguayan military authorities.
The Mariscal Estigarribia airport was constructed in the 1980s by US technicians hired by the former Paraguayan dictator Alfredo Stroessner. The concrete airstrip itself is larger than the one at the international airport in Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital. Mariscal Estigarribia has a population of only about 2000, which 300 belongs to the 6th Infantry Division, 3rd Corps, Paraguayan army garrison.
Due to the fact that its runway is apparently oversized for the Paraguayan Air Force, which only has a handful of small aircrafts, the airport is a favorite of regional conspiracy theorists. Upon a May 2005 agreement, Paraguay allowed the United States to use the airport for military maneuvers.
Pope John Paul II used the airport on 17 May 1988 when he visited the native mission of Santa Teresita, a few kilometers away, having arrived in a Boeing 707-320B Intercontinental chartered from LAP.
