Unlike most other Airports in Spain, Tenerife gets busier in the winter months as Northern European tourists flock here to take advantage of the warm, winter Tenerife weather. With passenger numbers now reaching 9,000,000 per year we have put together a detailed travel guide to help you navigate your way through Tenerife Airport and onto your holiday destination. When you have to return to Tenerife Airport at the end of your holiday we provide you with a list of Tenerife Airport shops and cafes in the Tenerife Airport departures hall and a full directory of Tenerife Airport telephone numbers for all services, airlines and baggage handling companies based at the airport.
Further Information It is estimated that in 2005 Tenerife Airport will handle around 9.5 million passengers which will help the airport maintain its place as one of the top six busiest airports in Spain. Tenerife Airport is also different from a number of the Airports that are on the Spanish mainland in that its visitor numbers actually go up over the winter period when the weather in Tenerife is the best on offer in Europe.
History With the Ministry's support for this proposal, the Inter-island Council bought land in the municipal districts of Granadilla and San Miguel de Abona. On 29 May 1970, the occupation of the property needed for the construction of a new airport and its ancillary facilities was declared of public use and urgent. In July 1973, the Air Ministry awarded the project for the airfield for a sum of around 450 million pesetas. Throughout 1976 the work for the taxiways and links, the power plant, moving of earth and development of the air terminal were successively allocated. Lastly, during 1977, the work for the control tower, installation of lighting on the main runway, taxiway and the terminal building were awarded.
Reina Sofia On 23 October 1978, Reina Sofía as the airport was named, opened twenty-four hours a day to civil domestic and international traffic as from 2 November and was considered to be a special top category airport. That day, at 10:17, the first plane, a CD-9 owned by Iberia running a flight from Lanzarote, landed at the airport. The official inauguration of the airport took place on 6 November 1978. At eleven fifteen, the aircraft Mystere of the Civil Aviation Undersecretaryship, in which HRH Queen Doña Sofía was travelling, landed at South Tenerife airport and was received by the minister for Transport, Salvador Sánchez Terán as well as other local and provincial authorities. After receiving the official honours, she proceeded to visit the passenger terminal facilities that were blessed by the Bishop of Tenerife, Luis Franco Gascón. Since then, more than 140 million passengers have passed through South Tenerife airport.
