Since Ryanair have been flying to Zaragoza the passenger numbers have increased from just 215,000 in 2004 to 354,000 in 2005.

The whole area around Zaragoza is quite heavily populated and the are an estimated 20 million people living within a 300km radius of the airport.

The airport itself is situated just 10 kms from the City center and is small and easy to get around.

The arrivals hall at Zaragoza Airport has just 2 conveyor belts and it is within this area that you will find the car hire companies offices.

The departures at Zaragoza Airport has 6 check in desks and upstairs on the top floor is a cafe and restaurant serving food and drinks throughout the day. Shopping at zaragoza is a little limited but there is a multi shop selling everything from Cigarettes to Perfume.

The taxis at Zaragoza Airport can be found by the doors in the arrivals hall. The taxi drivers know when the flights are coming and there are always some taxis waiting at the rank. A taxi into Zaragoza costs between €17-20.

History

The origins of the current airport at Zaragoza go back to the old Sanjurjo and Valenzuela aerodromes fitted out during the Civil War on land near the municipality of Garrapinillos. In 1940 both aerodromes were assigned mixed functions as military airbuses and a civil aerodromes.

Civil traffic was opened at Sanjurjo in September 1947. At the end of the year, the construction of a terminal began and it was opened in October 1950. The airfield was formed by a 1,800 by 1,000 metre rectangle of natural land and has a radio beacon, windsock and lit wind "T", night-time runway lighting and field edge lights.

In July 1948, the Valenzuela aerodrome was opened to international and Customs traffic, which had field edge lighting and landing lights. The following year, work to extend the runway began.

Commercial traffic returned to Zaragoza in June 1951, with the opening of the Madrid-Zaragoza and Bilbao-Zaragoza-Barcelona routes by the company Aviaco.

In 1953 an agreement was signed between Spain and the United States including the construction and joint use of some air bases and military facility and the Valenzuela air base was among them. Work to adapt the facilities began immediately: a 3,718-metre parallel runway was built seven hundred metres between the axes of the existing 2,600-metre one, as well as taxi-ways, aircraft parking and buildings. The Valenzuela air base facilities were moved north of the runway, with anti-aircraft artillery remaining to the south.

Sanjunjo airport was classified as a military base open to civil traffic and Customs airport open to international traffic in 1961. Four years later it would come to be officially called Zaragoza airport. Royal Decree 1167/1995, 7th July, finally classified it as a joint use air base/airport .

The airport is currently used as a freight distribution centre, which has obliged it to expand the area dedicated to freight at the same time as doing work on the passenger terminal.
