Samedan Airport (IATA: SMV, ICAO: LSZS), also known as Engadin Airport, is located at Samedan in the Engadin valley of Switzerland, just 5 km from St. Moritz. At an elevation of 1,707 metres (5,600 ft) it is the highest airport in Europe. It has one runway designated 03/21 which has an asphalt pavement measuring 1800 x 40 metres (5905 x 130 ft). The airport has no scheduled flights anymore. Samedan Airport is one of the available airports on the Google Earth flight simulator.
In February 2009, two accidents involving private jets occurred within a week of each other at the airport. On 7 February, a Global Express aircraft arriving from Warsaw overshot the end of the runway and plowed into snow. The aircraft was damaged but no injuries were reported.[1][2][3] On 12 February, a Falcon 10 aircraft from Vienna crashed during landing after a wing contacted a snow wall at the edge of the runway. The pilot and co-pilot were killed, and the single passenger onboard was seriously injured.[4][5][6]
