The airport is operated by Tepe Akfen Ventures The airport serves as the main airport for the city of Sousse and Monastir it also serves many charter airlines to many resorts around Tunisia .Handling and ground services at the airport are provided by Nouvelair.
In 2007, the airport handled 4,279,802 passengers.
The airport will begin to see a decline in aircraft movements as Enfidha Airport also operated by TAV has recently opened and charter airlines like Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook Airlines have moved many of there operations there due to the proximity to the resorts.

During World War II, the airport was known as Monastir Airfield and was used by the United States Army Air Force Twelfth Air Force 81st Fighter Group during the North African Campaign. The 81st flew P-39 Aircobras from the airfield between 26 May and 10 August 1943. t
