History In September 2004 Teesside International Airport changed its name to Durham Tees Valley Airport. Durham Tees Valley Airport was built on land known locally for generations past as 'Goosepool'. It came into being originally as Royal Air force Station, Middleton-St-George in 1941, as the base for No. 78 (Bomber) Squadron, and subsequently No. 76 (Bomber) Squadron. Later it housed 419, 420 and 428 (Bomber) Squadrons of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Among the many famous World War II aircraft for which RAF Middleton-St-George was a host was the Avro Lancaster bomber, an example of which still occasionally visits Durham Tees Valley Airport. It was in a Lancaster that a young pilot officer, based at Middleton-St-George, Andy Mynarksi carried out an act of such heroism and self-sacrifice that 2 years later he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the last VC to be awarded to an airman of World War II. Information Durham Tees Valley Airport is a growing regional airport offering a range of flights across the UK and to several destinations across Europe. The single terminal building comes equipped with bureaux de change, an ATM, baby change rooms, travel agency, post box, and a children's play area. There are cafes, bars and pubs both before and after security. A range of specialty shops and a newsagent cater for most needs, while duty-free can be found after security. The airport information centre offers phone, fax and photocopying facilities for business travelers, while there are BMI business and diamond class lounges in the departure lounge. For disabled passengers, there are specially designed toilets, dedicated parking, an Ambulift for boarding aircraft and an induction loop at the airport information desk. Darlington rail station is the nearest main line station to the airport, and offers numerous intercity services. Bus service 74 connects the airport with Darlington rail station and city centre. The airport is within convenient distance from both the A1 and A19 north-south highways, sitting on the A67 access road, and close to the A66. Taxis are available from outside the terminal building. Long- and short-term car parking is available in front of the terminal building (pre-book: 0870 0134749).
