Description Apart from scheduled services to the Scottish mainland and to Shetland, Kirkwall Airport is the base for the original inter-island services introduced and continuously operated by Loganair. We also support daily Royal Mail and newspaper flights. Other airport users include the Fisheries Protection aircraft, various charters and the Northern Lighthouse Board helicopter. Services to island airstrips include the Westray to Papa Westray route which, with a flying time of less than two minutes, is the shortest scheduled air service in the world. The small island airstrips are not managed by HIAL but maintained by Orkney Islands Council. Aircraft operations at Kirkwall are supported by an Air Traffic Control Service while on call services to air ambulance and search and rescue flights are assisted by a Flight Information Officer. An Airport Fire Service is provided on the basis of a Rescue and Fire Fighting Service category 4 airport as detailed in Civil Aviation Publication 168. (Category 5 on request). An Instrument Landing System (ILS) which facilitates aircraft operations in poorer weather conditions was recently installed. A business room at the terminal building is available for hire at a cost of £10.00 per hour which includes local/national phone calls, flip chart and tea and coffee making facilities. The room can cater for up to 8 people. A private dial-up internet access point is also available including word processing and fax facilities, 50 pence per half hour and 20 pence per page printed. Two televisions are provided - one in the main terminal and one in the departure lounge. Card and coin operated public telephones with low level seating are situated in the main concourse and a coin operated public telephone is available in the departure lounge. Broadband wireless access, broadband access and dial-up acess are all available in the terminal building at a cost of £1.50 per half hour. Disabled Access Provision Wheelchairs are available in the foyer of the terminal building and an Ambulift is also available for use by the airlines for access to/from aircraft by passengers. The terminal building's internal signage is compliant for those with impaired visibility, including hi-visibility flight information screens. A quiet room and baby change facilities are provided.
