London Heathrow International Airport |
London Heathrow Airport is situated west of London on the M4. Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport and the world's second busiest cargo port. There are over 90 airlines based at Heathrow Airport, all providing flights to both international and domestic destinations.
London Heathrow Airport has four main terminals, and there are plans to build a fifth to relieve pressure on the already very busy Terminal 1. The airport operates a host of passenger facilities and transportation options; all of these can be seen by clicking on the links to the left.
Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport. Regarded as the hub of the aviation world, over 90 airlines have made Heathrow their base.
- Number of terminals : four (Terminals 1, 2, 3 & 4)
- Number of passengers : 64 million
- Number of airlines : over 90
- Number of destinations : approximately 170
- Number of runways: two main, plus a cross wind runway
Serving over 64 million passengers each year, flying to over 170 destinations
in 90 countries, London Heathrow is the World's busiest international
gateway. However, its size also has meant that it has constantly expanded
beyond its original boundaries, and despite BAA investing some ?1million
per day in improving facilities, Heathrow remains one of the most disliked
places in the UK.
This need not be a huge problem, as the Heathrow Express will speed you
into the East End of London in just 15 minutes - whipping ?12 each way
from your wallet in the process.
Official name: London Heathrow International Airport
IATA Code: LHR| Owned by: BAA
Cheap flights from Heathrow
The prominence of Heathrow as in the World's biggest international gateway
means that landing charges are higher than any other UK airport, which
puts the majority of the low-cost airlines off. However, Virgin Express
do offer connections throughout Europe via their hub in Brussels, whereas
a range of good deals from the full-service airlines are still available
if you book at the right time.
Competitors or Alternatives to Heathrow
In a recent survey, voters rated the Heathrow Airport complex as one of
the ugliest places in Britain, although of course if you're a plane spotter
it is paradise. Part of a problem for the Heathrow is the huge traffic
congestion on the M4 and M25 motorways which feed into it, leaving many
people to choose alternative local airports where possible. Even with
the Heathrow Express, it will still take over an hour to reach many parts
of London. If your business is in the Docklands or The City, you may well
find that London City Ariport is a far more attractive option. You may
also be surprised by the range of destinations served - see our route
maps for details.
Development plans at Heathrow
After the longest planning inquiry in UK history, the go-ahead has now
been given for Terminal 5 at Heathrow, which is planned to open in 2007.
Richard Rogers is acting as chief architect for the project, and we hope
that even with the ?1 billion construction costs, it will not end up as
much of a white elephant as his infamous Millennium Dome in Greenwich.
Despite the post September 11th downturn, it is highly likely that by
the time this terminal finally opens, it will already be too small to
cater for the constantly increasing demand for flights. The recent UK
Government proposals for expansion of air travel in the South-East have
suggested that a third commuter runway may be able to relieve some of
the existing pressure at Heathrow.
Transport to Heathrow
The glossy adverts will quite rightly tell you that the Heathrow Express
is the fastest way into Central London, with a journey time and frequency
of 15 minutes. However, until the London CrossRail project is finished
and train links to the Midlands and South-West via Reading are opened,
Heathrow will remain as one of he most poorly connected major gateway
airports in Europe.
For travellers with their little more time, or tighter budgets, the Piccadilly
Line on the London Underground serves all four terminals, and will take
around an hour to reach central London. A variety of local and long-distance
bus services are available from Terminal 4 and Heathrow Central Bus Station.
Plenty of parking is available both in and around the airport, although
the multi-storeys in the central area are extremely expensive.
