Recent history
|
Baggage Claim Area |
Air traffic and passenger numbers at Bishop International have grown since AirTran started service in the early 2000s. At a time when passenger numbers dropped around the US, Flint's Bishop Airport was one of only a few airports to show growth. Passengers from the Detroit area were choosing Flint because of low fares and conveniences including short check-in and security lines and a hassle-free terminal building. In 2002, Flint bypassed MBS International Airport in Saginaw, Michigan to carrying more passengers to more destinations. Flint has also gone over some recent baggage claim extensions adding two more carousels bringing the total number to four.
Today, there is a great variety of airlines that fly their aircraft to many destinations from Flint. As a result of the popularity of some Flint-based routes, competition has been sparked among airlines. AirTran and Northwest Airlines are two great examples. In 2005, AirTran announced service to Fort Myers. A day later, Northwest announced the same service. Two days after Northwest's announcement, AirTran also announced nonstop flights from Flint to Las Vegas service starting a day before Northwest's planned start, and a 20-minute earlier departure. AirTran discontinued nonstop service to Las Vegas June 24, 2008, blaming the high price of jet fuel.
In 2005 and 2006, Flint resumed operation to Chicago O'Hare on American Eagle. In September 2007, American Eagle added a non-stop flight to Dallas Fort Worth. In November 2007, a non-stop flight to New York's LaGuardia airport was added by both American Eagle and Northwest Airlink, a subsidiary of Northwest Airlines. American Eagle stopped the flight to LaGuardia April 1, 2008. In February 2009, Northwest Airlines transferred the daily nonstop Northwest Airlink flight to nearby MBS International Airport.

In early February 2007, Bishop Airport unveiled a comprehensive 5-year developmental plan that would be slated for continuation through late 2011. The program called for two phases of "Intermodal Facility Development," including the expansion of the West Cargo Apron, what is now known as the Abex and Emory GVA Freight Ramp, located on the airport's northwest side.
The year 2008 was scheduled to include the design of a terminal ramp upgrade and the design of concourse area improvements including the recently-announced addition of free, airport-wide wireless internet access. Both projects are scheduled to begin in 2009.
In May 2009, Bishop Airport began Phase I of its Terminal Airside & Concourse Improvements program. Projects under this phase were developed in 2008. Included in this phase are upgrades to the terminal ramp, upon which the passenger concourse resides; the permanent closure and deconstruction of Runway 5/23; and the acquisition of new land for an envisioned Runway 9L/27R, which is scheduled to be designed in 2009 and constructed in 2010.
Runway 5/23 was closed permanently on May 4, 2009 as progress continued in the Capital Improvement Program. An additional runway, Runway 9R/27L, is scheduled for completion in 2010 under the same program.
The Airport's Future
According to an internal improvement assessment included in the FNT Airport Capital Improvement Program projects approximately 750,000 passenger enplanements within the next 6 to 10 years, shadowed by the current statistic of approximately 600,000 annual passenger enplanements. The airport's 5-year improvement plan is calling for an additional runway, enhancements to the economy parking lot, and improvements to general aviation facilities.
Ground transportation
Bishop International Airport is accessible from I-69, I-75, and US 23 by exiting Bristol road. The airport is also served by a bus line operated by the Flint MTA. The airport has car rental spots also.
Cargo Operations
In addition to airline operations, Flint's Bishop International Airport is also becoming a notable player in the air cargo industry. With nearby connections to two major interstates and one U.S. highway, in addition to numerous rail lines, a cargo hub is in development at Bishop Airport that is predicted to become a major benefit to the Flint-area economy.
The Flint-Bishop Airport is served by major cargo operators including FedEx Express. Milwaukee-based Skyway Airlines began cargo operations out of Flint in early 2008, adding to the list of cargo operators at Bishop Airport.
